Outside of our students' core curriculum of Math, Science, English, History and Religion at St. James Regional Catholic School, students have various “specials” that help enrich their education and allow them to pique their individual interests. Art is among these special classes. Mrs. Amy Small started teaching Art at St. James eight years ago, beginning our Art program.
In total, Mrs. Small has taught art for the past nine years. Prior to her time at St. James, she established the Art program at Ridley Park Presbyterian Church Nursery School in 2012, where she taught for five years. She has taught Art at St. James exclusively since 2017. Before she began teaching, she worked as an Art therapist for nine years. Mrs. Small helped children work through challenging situations and emotions using Art.
As an art teacher, it’s no surprise Mrs. Small thinks people might describe her as “creative.” She also believes passionate is another word to describe herself, devoting her life to her family and her work. She is also quite observant, paying attention to all the details in a situation.
In her free time, Mrs. Small enjoys traveling. In particular, she and her family enjoy visiting the observation decks of skyscrapers in major cities. They’ve made it to the top of Rockefeller Center in New York City, Willis Tower in Chicago, One Liberty Place close to home in Philadelphia and the CN Tower in Toronto. They love to see the world from a birds’ eye view.
She hopes to one day travel to Austria to visit the sights where The Sound of Music was filmed (one of her favorite movies, tied with It’s A Wonderful Life).
Mrs. Small has said this about her favorite thing at St. James Regional:
“As a teacher and a parent who’s been involved with St. James Regional since its inception, I’ve always been a big fan of the strong sense of family and community that we have here at St. James. I feel blessed that all 4 of my children have been able to attend St.James. And, though two of my four kids have since moved onto high school, they still feel (and I believe will always feel) a strong connection to the school that gave them their roots.”
