From September 15th through October 15th, St. James Regional celebrated Hispanic Heritage month in Spanish classes! Spanish teacher, Mrs. McGuire, led students from grades Kindergarten through 8th grades through different lessons and activities to learn more about Hispanic cultures.
Grades Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades did a read aloud about Hispanic food called Proud to Be Latino!
Grade 3 did a read aloud called Pepe and the Parade. It's a book about going to a festival for Hispanic Heritage with children from all different Hispanic countries. Students also read a bilingual book called "Lupita" about a girl who tells the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Grades 4 and 5 researched facts about 5 famous Hispanic people, learned what Hispanic countries or areas of the U.S. that they are from, and reviewed the countries that speak Spanish. Our 6th graders watched a video about famous HIspanic people, music ,food and unity.
For our 7th and 8th graders, Mrs. McGuire focused on how the greater Philadelphia community celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. Students learned about Feria del Barrio (a Hispanic Festival that takes place each year in Philly's Centro de Oro district), Taller Puertorriqueno ( a cultural center in Philadelphia) and Philadelphia Unity Cup, a soccer tournament that takes place during Hispanic Heritage Month with various players from different Latin American countries. They also learned about joropo (a Venezuelan folk dance). The 8th graders are fortunate to have a classmate, Luciana Perez, from Ecuador this year! Luciana brought many recuerdos (souvenirs) that her family has from Ecuador including dolls and tapestries for the class to see. She also discussed an indigenous dance that she danced in Ecuador and taught the students about the flag of Ecuador.
